As much as this website is based on nutrition and exercise we would be remiss to leave out a very important aspect of a healthy lifestyle known as Mental Wellness. There are other terms such as mental well-being, mental toughness, inner strength, and numerous others that refer to having mental wellness. Boiled down to its simplest terms it means to be emotionally stable and happy. LET'S BE CLEAR. 

There are levels of happiness and just like the term “normal”, there are varying degrees that are unique to each individual. What makes one person content can be vastly different from another person. We feel the best way to assess how we're doing mentally is to do a scheduled mental health check of yourself and how you are feeling.

There are online tests that can help with a mental evaluation. There are several good ones and one we like to do on a regular basis is the Happiness Test. This quick test will help to determine where you are personally and how you feel about your life. It’s important to note that not every day is going to be perfect and life will have its ups and downs. There are things that are beyond our control that can add stress to our lives. What we can control is how we deal with those stressors and our outlook which can help bring mental relief. Also keep in mind that if we don’t have everything that we want or life isn’t going exactly as we pictured it, as long as we continue to work towards our short and long-term goals things will be better than they seem at the moment.

When Things Get Tough...

 

           As much as we as humans hate to admit it we all have weaknesses. The worst thing we can do is beat ourselves up about it or compare ourselves to those around us, whether that be real-life acquaintances or people we follow on social media. As amazing an invention as the internet is, it does have its negative aspects.

 

          We should always keep in mind that most people try to keep themselves looking in a positive light, when in reality they may be struggling with the same things that we are. If life becomes too hard or there is a situation too difficult to deal with alone there is nothing wrong with seeking help. It can be a friend, family, online support groups, and or professional help.

 

           We would also like to mention that even though you may despise the idea of going to a mental health practitioner or that it may in some way solidify the idea that something is wrong with you, someone who specializes in mental health may be more beneficial. Not only are they trained in how to help you but they can also listen without judgment of who you are and what you are going through. It can not always be said the same for family and friends. Whatever you choose we urge you to not try and go it alone when there are many avenues for help.

What About Medications? 

There is often a stigma that comes with taking medicine to help maintain our mental stability. Sometimes not only do we not understand why we are struggling but it can be exacerbated by those close to us and our environment. There is nothing wrong with taking medicine to help balance our brain chemistry. There is a real benefit to having an aid to get us back on track. Life can be hard and sometimes we need help coping from time to time. We say all of this with only one caveat, that you refrain from self-medicating.

There are several ways to enhance our mental wellness. Most are simple in nature and can be combined with each other to keep us feeling good.
